Reachable Buyer Map: Brazil

Prepared for Joao Schreiner · Tecumseh · August 2026
A compressor is specified by one person, bought by a second and lived with by a third. The Brazilian public register splits this market the same way: making, installing and servicing refrigeration are three separate registered activities. This map follows that split across Brazil. The layers that buy in this market, who signs inside each one, and how large each layer is where a public source will support a number. It describes the market rather than your business, and there is nothing to buy at the end of it.
Household appliance makers
The most concentrated layer on this page and the one where a single platform decision runs for years. Small enough that the whole segment can be listed by name in an afternoon.
Who signs: the platform or product engineering lead, the sourcing and category buyer, and quality.
A short list, in the low dozens
refrigerator and freezer producers serving the Brazilian market; concentrated enough that coverage, not volume, is the only sensible measure
Commercial refrigeration equipment makers
Display cases, bottle coolers, walk-ins, ice machines and vending equipment. Classified apart from air conditioning in the public register, which is the first place a generic list goes wrong.
Who signs: the design or applications engineer, the purchasing manager, and the product manager who owns the line.
One manufacturing class, counted apart
the register separates commercial and industrial refrigeration equipment from air conditioning equipment; no single published figure spans both
Wholesale distribution and the parts channel
Where the replacement decision gets made without the original equipment maker in the room. The aftermarket runs on availability and on who the branch trusts, not on the original specification.
Who signs: the purchasing director, the product or category manager, and the branch network lead.
Registered apart from manufacturing
distributors and parts wholesalers are classified separately, so they never appear in a list built from manufacturing codes
Installation and service firms
Two different registered activities, not one. Installing refrigeration equipment and repairing it are separate classifications, and the firms that do each have different economics and different buying triggers.
Who signs: the owner, the technical director, and the project engineer on larger contracts.
Two separate registered activities
installation and maintenance are classified apart from each other and apart from manufacturing; one keyword collapses three buyers into one
Food retail operators
The largest end-user layer by installed base. Every format from the neighborhood market to cash and carry runs refrigeration as a core operating cost, and replaces it on a cycle.
Who signs: the store operations or maintenance director, the engineering lead, and group procurement at the chains.
425,000 to 440,000
food retail stores across all formats in Brazil, per published retail sector reporting; store count, not company count
Food service operators
Fragmented, enormous, and the layer where equipment failure is felt first. Individually small, collectively the pull that decides which equipment gets specified next.
Who signs: the owner-operator at the independents, and facilities or purchasing at the chains and caterers.
900,000 to 1.1 million
food service businesses in Brazil, per the sector trade body count; formal, registered operators only

Where the openings are

1
The energy label resets the specification conversation. Brazil's efficiency label for refrigerators now runs on a shorter class scale, aligned to the current international test standards, and every unit sold has to show its monthly consumption. Any platform that has to clear the top class reopens its component decision, and that window shuts once a platform is picked. Reaching named engineering and sourcing seats on a schedule catches it. Waiting for the next fair catches it a year late.
2
The register splits one word into three buyers. In Brazil, making, installing and servicing refrigeration are three distinct registered activities. A list built on the word refrigeration merges them and sends all three the same message, which is most of why bought lists underperform in this category. Separating them is the reachable market.
3
The specifier is not the signer. An engineer chooses the component, sourcing buys it, and the service organization lives with it for a decade. Three seats, three different arguments, and typically only one of the three travels to the show where you would meet them.
4
Pull comes from the end of the chain. Hundreds of thousands of retail stores and close to a million food service businesses decide what gets replaced and when. Demand created at that layer changes what the equipment maker specifies, and almost nobody in this category works it deliberately, because it sits two steps away from the invoice.
Built from public market data for Brazil: the national industrial classification structure, sector trade body reporting, and published retail and food service surveys, current to the most recent published year. Counts are banded deliberately. Where no public register enumerates a layer, this map says so rather than estimating it.
